  SWITZERLAND
Daniel Sottas & Nicole Gisler

Dear Raju, Namaste

It’s been over three weeks since we returned from our Indian journey. Our “Swiss” life is back to normal; with work, various activities and the gray November weather. I brought an immense happiness home with me; one that I found during our journey and I must admit that I live with a smile on my face, and am in a total harmony ever since.

I would like to thank you once again for the organization of this incredible journey. Obviously everything wasn’t perfect, but imperfections allow for improvement and I’m keeping in mind my plan to organize an attractive journey throughout Rajasthan for a group of 10 in November 2011 and I would like to collaborate with your agency once again.

Here are some of the main points.

1. Concerning hotels:

  • Dehli: Grand Godwin: perfect

  • Mandawa: Heritage Mandawa: perfect and charming, friendly personnel

  • Bikaner: Hotel Harasar Haveli: hotel good, unfriendly and bothersome personnel, tending to wait on tips and to exaggerate their wait!

  • Jodhpur: polo Heritage: perfect

  • Ranakpur: Hill resort: perfect

  • Udaipur: natural hotel: poor, with a tiny room and an insufficient breakfast

  • Pushkar: Ram Kuti: average yet sombre hotel, but the reception was very welcoming

  • Jaipur: tordi Haveli: perfect

  • Ranthambore: Ankur resort: probably more pleasant in the bungalows. We enjoyed an excellent meal in the beautiful garden, but unfortunately the staff was untrustworthy, so I had to verify the bill and there was a 1500 Rs discrepancy!!!

  • Agra: Sheela: quaint hotel and perfect proximity for visiting the Taj Mahal

  • Varanesi: Sahi River View: very good, small terrace on the Ganges, a very friendly staff

  • Chandigarh: Diamond Plaza: very poor, dirty, noisy, very bad breakfast

  • Shimla: Hotel Woodpark. beautiful room view, but not adapted to western tourists who prefers to be near the pedestrian main street

  • Rishekesh: Topovan Resort: perfect but a room overlooking the garden would have been better as it was very noisy roadside.

  • The night in the express train Marudhar: very nice, comfortable

2. Concerning drivers:

  • Sharma is an excellent driver, both trustworthy and cautious. He drives like a snake, slinking in and out of traffic with ease, with no sudden braking or accelerations. A very pleasant sensation for me, as I get carsick at times.

  • Varanesi: guide and driver: nothing to say about the driver, and our guide was very interesting and very pleasant. He may have found us to be a bit undisciplined, but we visited all the places that he had to show us.

  • Rawat: very kind and always smiling, but not very sure of himself. He had problems overtaking trucks, slammed on the brakes often, only to hit the gas, swerving in and out of traffic needlessly, jostling us around the car. I was under the impression that he was afraid of driving in the mountains, and had problems choosing gears....... We lost a lot of time on the road ....... endless days. When we left him, he asked us for money for a full tank of gasoline because we had to turn back once as Daniel had left something important behind. Why did not he charge us this tank of gasoline when he filled up? In Rishikesh, we didn’t visit anything and except for a 16 km of car ride for our rafting trip, so he had close to 4 days to himself. Obviously he was at our disposal but we rarely sought him out. We left each other at the airport of Dehli in a bizarre atmosphere. He was not satisfied with the tip, and we no longer had rupees. Did he speak to you about it? Personally, it hurt me to leave things like that...

In brief, nothing very important went wrong and nothing perturbed our journey. I returned full of dreams. One of the unforgettable moments was the Taj Mahal- just speaking about it gives me shivers. You had predicted this would occur when mentioning Jaipur to me. We stayed on site for 6 hours and the Taj Mahal never left my sight. I was completely enthralled. Varanesi and its particular atmosphere, Rishikesh, the bathing in the Ganges, the Yoga lessons, beautiful encounters with sadhu baba, Pushkar -a moment of serenity even if there was no water in the lake , the safaris, without tigers, but amidst nature’s beauty.

Each moment was something unforgettable, each day a new experience, each meeting a moving encounter, and I feel so much fuller today because of it. I have solved a lot of problems inside me and I believe that I have discovered a happiness within which has given a sense to my life.

Incredible India, you transform us....
