This city lies on the northern
point on the triangle of desert cities. Bikaner is another royal walled
city dating back to 1486 AD. It was a major trade center as it stood on
the ancient silk route which linked Central Asia and North India with the
Gujarat seaports. Other outside influences were minimal and this city was
able to keep its medieval flavor alive -in fact this is true of the city
even today.

Laxmi Niwas Palace
The historical stretch of land
covering the area of the back portion of Laxmi Niwas Palace and various
quarters of State time is known as Lallgarh. Situated in this stretch of
royal apartments is the residence of Late Maharaja Ganga Singh, the maker
of modern Bikaner, who personally conceived, foresaw and supervised the
construction of his personal residence. The Laxmi Niwas Palace a
magnificent red sandstone edifice designed by Sir Swinton Jacob in the
Anglo-Scenic style.
